courses: blue course

The Royal Montreal Golf Club’s Blue Course is one of Canada’s finest tests of golf. It demands a combination of power and control off the tees, and sharp play into the tiered greens Rees Jones created when he renovated the course in 2004. Of the three courses at Royal Montreal, the Blue Course is the slightly bolder course, and members had anticipated that it would be the venue for any professional tournaments.

The Dick Wilson design was completed in the Fall of 1958.The first rounds were played by members in the Summer of 1958. After many years, it was decided that the Blue Course required modifications, in order to address the changes in equipment technology which affected both members and the top players who would challenge the Course in future championships such as The Presidents Cup. In May 2004, Royal Montreal chose Rees Jones and his associates, including lead designer Bryce Swanson, to update the Blue Course.

The fully renovated course, complete with improved drainage, opened for play in August of 2006. Every green and several tees were rebuilt; all the tees were made square as well. All fairway and greenside bunkers were also rebuilt.  

In the end, the 14th Hole would become perhaps the most talked about hole during The Presidents Cup, for the exploits of a golfer who would be dubbed “Aquaman” after his experience there.
